Hi all. I really appreciate the feedback to my article and the conversation it has started. More people need to know about DMSO. I have found it very effective for a variety of uses in my own family. I have friends trying it now also.

I plan to follow up with an article that answers some of the basic questions readers have. Reply with suggestions. NOTE: Substack inadvertently dropped my byline from this and all my many RESCUE articles when I made a change to my account. The Substack AI bot apologizes. Should not have happened.

Thanks so much for writing this article. I do have a question. What percentage DMSO do you take orally. We can get it in 2 different strengths so not sure which one to take. Thanks Alison

I’m sure the answer to my question is very deep in the comments, but can anybody tell me a brand that they’ve ordered and used that has worked there are so many out there who in the world can discern which ones are just junk and which ones are pure? I’ve tried and it’s pretty much a rabbit hole.

The DMSO Store (dmsostore dot com) or DMSO, LLC in Ghent, KY are both very reputable and carry pharma grade.

Please tell me if all DMSO smells horrible. I bought one with Frankincense from Amazon and it smells vile. Enough to activate the gag reflex.

Dave Slough's avatar

Dr Malone who was referenced bringing recent DMSO to the public (which is where I started reading about DMSO) recommends this product

I use it, it has no smell and has the consistency of a hair jell

It does make my skin itchy though

Two ingredients: DMSO and distilled water

Mary Beth: thanks so much for your posts on DMSO. Question, my husband had a stroke in December. Obviously it is past the trauma, but would DMSO still possibly help him recover at the stage? It affected part of his brain, but there are no obvious physical side effects from the stroke, only slight mental ones thanks.

Rod LeBlanc Dr. TCM.'s avatar

I started the use of DMSO a couple of months ago. I am now 76. I was suffering for ten years with ligament tendon and muscle sclerosis from a labral tear in my hip on one side and a huge Baker's cyst in my knee on the other side. I am a Dr. of Traditional Chinese medicine and used many protocols including prolotherapies, platelet therapies, trigger point injections w/homeopathics with little longterm benefit. After reading the midwestern doctor about DMSO, I started doing injections of 50% sodium chloride 50% DMSO. Straight DMSO is too viscous. But initially I was totally impressed with the tendon/muscle twitches when I was treating my condition. It was like a complete return to the hydraulic pump the tendon was originally intended. Within a day a good portion of the pain and stiffness was resolved. Continued and subsequent injection treatments and topically in my cyst reduced the bulge to nodules in the tendon with the promise of a complete resolution. My eyes were blurry and going into cloudy vision so I started with a euphrasia homeopathy in sodium chloride and a few drops of DMSO. I see better than I did at 20.

Kathleen Nathan's avatar

Wow!!! so happy for you Rod LeBlanc. I think the big problem with DMSO is that it is cheap, effective and available. Who is going to get any money from that? To me it is very interesting that originally DMSO was made from "tree juice" discovered while making paper... Trees are nature's most marvelous creation. God has told us that the leaves of trees will be for the healing of the nations. I think that is decidedly so!

I also use DMSO diluted with distilled water as eye drops. I am now using the glasses I wore 2O years ago because my eyesight has improved!

Rod LeBlanc Dr. TCM.'s avatar

I also appreciate that it comes from trees. Many saps like frankincense and myrrh are also ancestral healing since biblical times especially for pain. My dad would take me on walks and scrap sap from spruce trees say the indigenous would chew the gum to become incredibly strong and for teeth. He kept his teeth all his 94 years of life.

I’ve read a bunch of your replies - thanks for chiming in. Have a question for you. I got diagnosed with SSNHL (sudden sensorineural hearing loss) about 4-5 days after my hearing stopped working in my left ear. What would you do if you wanted to try DMSO? I’ve already done the high dose oral steroids, intratympanic steroid injections, and some acupuncture.

Rod LeBlanc Dr. TCM.'s avatar

I wrote above about the hydrogen peroxide rinse or actually can be an application with some manner, even a wetted q tip, inserted in the ear canal. Crackling occurs and let dry. Take an applicator and some DMSO and apply in the ear, in the chamber. If you have too much liquid it will clear in time and do some lymph massage in the groove of the jaw and SCM muscle or do some ear stretching.

Bob Distefalo's avatar

That’s great. And how much pure DMSO to distilled water? What’s the percentage?

Rod LeBlanc Dr. TCM.'s avatar

SSNHL can have many causes including sounds that can damage the nerves and blood flow. In TCM even kidney decline or neuroendocrine decline. We often use herbals as well, but I would still use DMSO. The combination is still A.Vogel eye drops because of the euphrasia and its ability to clear catarrh. 10 drops with a couple of DMSO drops. Because the liquid would plug my ear canal I resorted to applying the liquid with an applicator that went up to the canal as that semed to work best.

Sunlover's avatar

What percentage of dmso do you use with the distilled water for eyedrops and how often do you use it? I would very much like to try this, but of course want to be very careful about anything I apply to my eye.

Rod LeBlanc Dr. TCM.'s avatar

I use a homeopathic from A. Vogel that has euphrasia in their eye drops because it has no preservative. Take about ten drops and 2 drops of DMSO. Be prepared for a shock at first that lasts a minute or two.

Integrity and Karma's avatar

Pharmaceutical grade 99% DMSO? Thank you.

Roberta Gonzales's avatar

So are you mixing the (10) eye drops, to (2) drops DMSO before applying to eye?

Rod LeBlanc Dr. TCM.'s avatar

Yes. I put the eye drops in a sterile spoon and then a couple of drops of DMSO are added. I then take the dropper and draw up the liquid. The reason I use the A.Vogel is because the euphrasia in the saline solution common name is "eyebright".Eyebright or euphrasia is typically used both orally and topically for catarrh as a nasal rinse, for the eyes and ears. The ears are a challenge. I would use hydrogen peroxide food grade diluted to 8% and listen for the cracking breaking up the wax first. Wait for drying to occur and then apply the DMSO to the outer areas working the liquid on the surface into the canal.

Douglas's avatar

Regarding the mixture of the Vogel Euphrasia drops and DMSO, could you premix them beforehand and keep refrigerated?

Don Midwest's avatar

Here is my non chemical treatment for ear wax.

After a shower washing hair and face and both washing ears.

I use COSTCO toilet paper - any high end brand, and three sheets of toilet paper. The first sheet to dry out the ears. Then each remaining one is folded in quarters and rolled up. Sometimes it goes all the way to the ear drum, but not often. I first use the rolled up pointed end, then turn it over and and use the big end. I shower about every three days. This has worked for several years to keep the ear wax down. I wear hearing aids.

Kathleen Nathan's avatar

I use a little more than that....about 4 drops DMSO drops to 1O of water......I try to do this a few times a day. It does sting a tiny bit....

ILoveLiberty's avatar

What was your actual dose? I have glaucoma and cataracts.

Kathleen Nathan's avatar

I use about 25% dmso and 75% distilled water in an eyedropper. I put several drops in the bottom part of my open eye and squeeze it shut for a few seconds. This is just a protocol I devised for myself as I have often used straight dmso for things like burns, cuts and insect bites. I have found it hastens healing and seems to soothe irritations. I dilute the dmso for eyes as it stings a bit and I am being cautious. I used straight dmso for things like sprains and pulled muscles. I does seem to relieve pain....This is my subjective experience.

I believe it has been shown to be a benign substance and that it would take a very large amount to cause harm through application or through ingestion. That is my understanding from the literature I have read. Perhaps I am wrong. I am not a doctor or a scientist. I do not know what causes the eye conditions you mention. I think these are specific and complicated conditions that may have genetic and/or environmental causes.... I think that you should find a professional familiar with your problems and also knowledgable about the uses and effects of dmso on eyes. Good luck and hope this helps!

Verve's avatar

I tripped and fell in December and have a second degree sprain in my left wrist - the TFCC - it's taking forever to heal - I know it's not possible to ask for medical advice but "for entertainment purposes only" could you weigh in on whether a topical DMSO could help my wrist and what kind/brand to look for?

pimaCanyon's avatar

I've had sprains and strains that have been very slow to heal, or even become chronic. DMSO has cleared these up in a few days! I'd apply topically to the wrist and lower part of the hand and upper part of the forearm. I'd start with 70%. If it's too itchy, try a lower concentration (which you can make yourself by adding a little distilled or RO water to the DMSO). MWD has recommended these two brands:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VDIEOD2

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BSYQ0XC

Verve's avatar

OH MY GOSH THANK YOU! Once it clears up do you need to keep applying it in perpetuity?

pimaCanyon's avatar

once it clears up, you don't need to keep applying. I would use pain and sensitivity as your guide. Once the pain/swelling/sensitivity is gone, stop applying it. If any of those come back, start using it again. When you first begin using it, I'd go with a couple of applications a day. Could even do 3 or 4. I suspect that once it clears up, you will rarely need to apply it again. But if you do, it's inexpensive, it works, and it has zero negative side effects, at least for me.

My knee issue is from an injury which caused an inflammation of the underside of the kneecap. I also have a meniscal tear on that same knee. I use DMSO on it whenever I feel pain from either issue, which fortunately is now rare. They say meniscus does not regrow, but I'm hoping they're wrong ;-) Meanwhile I resort to DMSO when I need to which is not very often and usually results from doing a long hike.

Verve's avatar

Thank you so much- I happened to have ordered your second recommendation before I saw your reply, so I was happy to see this - I'll report back after using it a bit in case others want more anecdotal evidence- it arrives Friday!

pimaCanyon's avatar

if you ordered the 100% liquid, I'd dilute it a little before using. My feet can tolerate the 100%, but it kind of wrinkles the skin which has already returned to normal after going back to a 70% solution. I hope it helps. Good luck!

Many people start with a 20% ratio of DMSO to 80% 0.9 NACL, Zero, or distilled water. They may move up to no higher than 40%. They place 2-3 eye drops multiple times per day.

Easy to make your own in a 2 oz eye drop dark brown container. Keep in dark location.

Hope you can find my answer to Roberta.

Bonnie Callipare's avatar

Are you certain it was sodium chloride and not sodium chlorite? Big difference.

Rod LeBlanc Dr. TCM.'s avatar

It has to be sterile Sodium chloride, an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl, representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions. Used in injections Sodium chloride is the primary salt in seawater and in the extracellular fluid of many multicellular organisms but it has to be sterile and comes from a pharmaceutical grade.

I twisted my knee horribly last August. Although the swelling had gone done, by October I still could not bend it much at all nor fully extend it. In constant pain of varying degrees, had greatly difficulty sleeping. Needed a cane to walk, and reliant upon elevators and escalators to get to and from work by commuter train. In early October, my brother in law who is a physical therapist suggested that if not resolved on its own in that time, then surgery was most likely required.

Relaying this information on my own substack, several of my readers recommended DMSO and a few actually sent some to me. The benefits began almost immediately. I am now walking without a cane and no longer dependent upon escalators and elevators. In fact, when the weather is nice, I walk between certain stations instead of riding the train. Last week I walked approximately 6 km without the cane. No surgery.

I am sold on DMSO.

1 part honey

3 parts water

7 parts dmso

Thank you Dr Miller, Ms Eyre and to all of you for your enlighten me about the amazing properties of DMSO. I am a family physician in Cape Town. I treated over 3000 COVID patients with a 99.97% success rate using Ivermectin and other repurpurposed drugs. I recently have started using DMSO for my patients with severe injuries, arthritis and asthma. I have been using it on myself with amazing results. I am 76. I had a bypass teo stent's and two heart attacks. I am off statins. My physical ability and memory have improved significantly ever since using DMSO. It's an amazing drug. I am now using in combination with ivermectin to treat my patients with cancer. Unfortunately most of my patients with cancer present way too late to achieve the results I am trying to achieve.

I would love to hear other people's experiences. Dr Rapiti

In my 3O's I was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis...not at all a pleasant experience and spent a month or so wheeling around in a wheelchair because my knees swelled to twice their normal size....I read a book about DMSO and immediately tried some. It helped a lot. I also took up eating a lot of salad and fresh vegetable juices. I have never had a relapse....though I was told it was "incurable" and I could look forward to being crippled and in pain forever. My husband and I both use DMSO whenever we are injured or in pain. It always brings relief ... especially when combined with other herbal formulas. Will heal burns in record time..... I have heard it is also used by vets for horses....not sure on that though.....

Itsjustananalogy's avatar

When I had horses in the 90’s my vet was using it for any sort of swelling and tendon issues. It’s how I found out about it. Had a book from 2 doctors in Washington/Oregon? that wrote a book about it back then but I can’t remember the name of the book. They were already using it with much success.

How to bring DMSO therapy for whole range of conditions as a mainline therapy world over, which would mean millions of doctors world over becoming aware of its potential. I am from India, as I write this my 60 year old brother in law ( I am 80 years) will, in two hours, undergo an endoscopic removal of his swollen prostate to normalise his urinations, a problem he began facing some three weeks ago. Would his urologist surgeon know about the topical use of DMSO for healing his prostate without having to removing it ? I doubt, even he is highly qualified.

I had suggested this in some past comments, would Sulforaphane be a more acceptable product for all internal uses of DMSO for various conditions ? It shares the critical structural component of DMSO, the sulfoxide ( >S=O) dipole which can ionise easily as S(+)O(-) which I strongly believe is the reason for its biological versatility ? Sulforaphane also has a thiocyanate group ending small alkyl chain, replacing one methyl group of DMSO and it could carry additional advantages. If proven to work, the sulfoxide group can be easily put on the patient table for ready use in various conditions. Would very much like your comments.

More than 50 years ago, my PhD in organic chemistry ( 1973, University of Madras, India, was on the mechanisms of DMSO as a reaction co-solvent along with water in some specific organic reactions ( hydrolysis by sodium hydroxide), with reaction rates/kinetics, as the measuring tool. I had used litres and litres of solvent DMSO for this work, kindly gifted by Crown Zellerbach Corporation of the USA. For comparison, I studied the same reaction rates in aqueous ethanol medium. Ethanol is a protic solvent capable of forming a solvent molecular shield for hydroxide ions along with water via hydrogen bonding. DMSO is a dipolar aprotic solvent, capable of breaking the water molecule shield of OH- ions by complexing with water. It forms a strong 1:2 ionic complex with water, 1 molecule of DMSO to 2 molecules of water through its sulfoxide dipole. This will strip the water shield of hydroxide ion in solution, make it bare and increase its hydrolysing capacity by hundreds of times. On the other hand, it can reduce the hydrolytic rate of many nitrogen containing organic molecules by simply complexing with them through its dipole. I think in the body it is how it works at disease sites at molecular level.

Does anyone have any recommendations about the 70 percent aloe-based gel that he mentions using? I'm a little confused, does this gel have DMSO mixed with aloe?

Kathryn Caldwell's avatar

Yes, 70% DMSO and 30% aloe gel. I got mine on Amazon in a 3 oz. roll-on bottle from the DMSO STORE. There is a roll-on bottle of just straight DMSO so be sure to differentiate.

Jeff's avatar

Thank you very much !

Truthseeker's avatar

If the gel is too strong, and has a burning effect, just add a little more aloe vera gel to it. It should have a tingle to it. Gradually reduce the amount of added gel. Do that for at least a month before starting orally. Start small and build up. You will learn where you tolerance levels are.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

I used three different formulations of DMSO. I started using it at 50/50 DMSO/Distilled water. This performed most of the miracle on my knee. Then I received 99% DMSO. It seemed less effective but my knee was mostly fully functional again. Another reader suggested that a property of DMSO makes it less effective at 99% for at least some applications. Then a 3rd reader sent me the 70/30 DMSO Aloe Vera gel. This is easier to use and finished off the work on my knee. I applied it again to both knees and much of both legs last night for he first time in a while, did a lot of walking last week and the muscles were sore. Felt great this morning and indeed all day.

So I bought the brand Midwestern Doc recommended on Amazon from DMSO Store. It’s 99.99%. I made my own 50/50 with distilled in one of those blue glass spray bottles. I sprayed on a cut for several days, didn’t seem to do much. So I bought another glass spray bottle and made a 75% solution which I’ve been spraying on that same (now) scar and one varicose vein area on my upper inside thigh. I haven’t seen any real difference in either of these small problems. I do get a heat reaction when I first mix the water and DMSO, but have never tasted garlic. I’m wondering if I should try straight DMSO. It’s funny you thought the 99% wasn’t as effective?

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

Not really. Most of the work was already done. Further, there is that issue with how it interacts with water in the body. I never tried it in a cut but did on some varicose veins and blueing from an ancient ankle injury. It helped the former but not in the latter.

The same sulfoxide dipole of DMSO or Sulforaphane can confer strong anti viral properties also, against viruses like this Covid corona virus. It can strip the protective water molecules of the virus spike active sites or complex with its cationic spike protein sites and prevent it from lodging on cell walls in preparation of cell entry. If other anti virals are used, it can expose the virus particle to the action of the drug molecules. It can be as DMSO nasal spray with water or even as oral medicine. Any reports on its use ? Would you able to get at least tested in vitro on the virus ? DMSO, for similar reasons, can neutralise the lingering vaccine spikes also, could be useful in long vax presentations in eliminating the spikes.

For Moro Balakrishnan: I am unvaccinated, got Covid naturally in April 2021, 15 days of extreme headache( blood clots blowing out my nose) ,11 days of diarrhea, flu symptoms, weakness, spent 3 days in hospital for pneumonia. My taste & smell was accentuated and became unbearable last 3 days in hospital, probably because they gave me an anti- viral. Taste & smell was like rotten meat ,until I swabbed povidone up my nose ,2 times and taste /smell returned to normal. I used poisoned iodine in saline spray throughout the rest of the covid nightmare. Haven't had covid since, now 2025. I now use DMSO in Silver water in a nasal sprayer every day, most days 2 times. Not any respiratory issues, sickness despite being around others who keep getting covid like symptoms all the time. I will stand by : povidone iodine sprays and DMSO / collidial silver nasel sprays for the rest of my life( 72 now) Hope this is helpful.

Moro Balakrishnan's avatar

Only divine fortune saved you after those horror initial days. It could have got worse, like those millions who didn’t have simple classical early treatments and ended up in pitiable statistics. Why didn’t you check on social media how million others in the rest of the world were handling this virus with such approaches. At 76 in early 2022, I had omicron, most symptoms mild only, but severe cold. I handled it with a 10 day self course of Azithromycin, Montelukast, Levocetrizine, and Oxymetazoline nasal drops.

It is just as well that your DMSO - pivodone iodine stuff is helping you ? Though they carry strong science, they are not yet established protocols. Wonder if you could take the opinion of an appropriate doctor on this. In its absence, you have to go by your nose, literally. I am not a doctor, but an organic chemist interested in medicinal chemistry in retirement, as a reading interest. My feeling is that your unvaccinated status helped you by retaining the natural immunity from your severe infection. Take care. Wishing you all the best.

Apologies for my naivety - I get confused between DMSO and CDS.

Do they treat different ailments?

I’m not sure where to start?

I’ve read many substacks and fear my brain just can’t seem to process it.

pimaCanyon's avatar

don't know what CDS is, but DMSO is amazing. Very easy to use if you apply it topically. If it causes too much itching, just use a lower concentration which you can make yourself by adding a little distilled or RO water to the DMSO that you have. Good luck!

Eva's avatar

Thank you I really appreciate your reply. I will take a look and see what I can buy and give it a go.

Liberty Liz's avatar

CDS (MMS) is comply different from DMSO, though there are instances where they are used together. Jim Humble's book on (about the MMS part a/part b mixture of drops method version of CDS, the infused version of chlorine dioxide), "MMS Health Recovery Guidebook" covers the use of MMS (CDS) with the use of DMSO, but the two (MMS/CDS and DMSO) are not the same product or chemical.

Eva's avatar

Thank you do much for helping me. I think you make a great point, I will buy his book and maybe Vollmers book too. I need to learn more. Since I posted I’ve now started using DMSO topically so “dipping my toe” in these healing methodologies as it were and feeling less scared and confused.
