This is horrifying. Oil and gas are not nearly as dangerous or long-lasting as SF6.

The gang of heartless, greedy bastards running the United States and lying through corrupted media are actually taking all creatures headlong to complete destruction. 💔

Once again, government and media are failing on an issue with major implications. Don’t dare raise questions. There’s only one right side. Yes, this sounds familiar. At this rate, whales will soon be extinct not to mention other disturbing environmental harms. Thanks to Linda Bonvie for doing New York Times-worthy work.

I suspect you meant "New York Times worthy" as a compliment, but sadly, I think that descriptor disparages this excellent article. IMO the NYT has zero credibility left, whereas this article seems to have been written by someone with immense credibility.

Expand full comment

I'm sure you meant, with apologies to Linda Bonvie.

The NYT is bought and paid for, probably by the CCP. After all, they want to destroy their competition. What better way to do that than to promote incredibly inefficient energy production by their greatest adversary?

Horrible! "beaching themselves" is a euphemism fro COMMITTING SUICIDE. These are not animals that don;' know oceans tides and currents; they are extremely intelligent but the pain and discomfort is too much, so they, like humans under extreme stress often choose to die to escape. THIS MUST STOP.

Expand full comment

We need to use the correct terminology and stop the coverup of these suicides! So tragic and unnecessary.

Thank you Linda Bonvie for this powerful and highly informative piece. I no longer watch MSM news here in MD (have these “beachings” or turbine plans been covered?) and had absolutely no idea this was happening. This piece needs to be shared far and wide. Sadly (and infuriatingly) there are far too many who will be accepting of the collateral damage “for the greater good” and in the name of “Science”. Now where and when have I heard that before? 🤔

I’m finding it extremely hard to find any greater good in destroying our ocean life. My heart breaks for these wonderful animals.

They DO know the sonar is killing the whales. They don't care because the sonar originates for "clean energy" instead of for military applications or for oil-gas energy purposes.

For example, in Washington state, the governor is currently fighting NOAA regarding Navy sonar harming whales there; e.g., see https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/environment/washington-state-officials-slam-navys-changes-to-military-testing-program-that-would-harm-more-orcas/. Luckily there are currently no wind projects going on, as it would lay bare the inconsistency of these environmentally minded people/organizations regarding protecting ocean life from sonar.

There are studies proving the damages that sonar does to whales; e.g., see https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2017.00295/full. At least one environmental/legal firm, at one time, fought this, but only in relation to Navy testing and oil/gas drilling; e.g., see https://earthjustice.org/video/b-roll-whales-and-navy-sonar. They are silent and not fighting the sonar issues on the east coast associated with "clean energy"; see their website for what I mean: https://earthjustice.org/office/oceans.

Fukushima multiple reactors melted into the ocean! Duh...! 🐑'll

The Fukushima reactors did not melt into the ocean. Moreover they were based on 1960s technology and each had a simple design flaw that, in retrospect, was an easy fix.

As a physicist and a person involved fighting wind energy for a LONG time, TY for your generally good post. FYI, I recently outlined four MAJOR reasons against Offshore Wind in one of my Substack commentaries <https://criticallythinking.substack.com/p/critically-thinking-about-offshore>. It points out several serious issues that you did not mention.

How can people stand to watch this happen over and over? How can they allow it? I strongly believe that if this had happened even twenty years ago, people would have blown up all of the murdering turbines. I don't know why we aren't doing it now! We're supposed to be the Earth's stewards, not its murderers! I never cared this much when I was younger - I wish I had!

Expand full comment

Because the left has completely lost its (our) way. You are correct - twenty years ago, greenpeace would have been out there in little inflatables, taking on the behemoth towers, bringing attention to the slaughter. Normal humans would have had normal feelings of sorrow and reonsideration. Not every single one, but near enough.

Now, though, the left has tied itself in knots to SUPPORT big business, big tech, big government - to parrot the lies, repel all invaders, attack anyone who dares question authority. I mourn for the birds, the whales, and the people who used to give a damn about things besides aligning themselves with and enforcing evil.

Expand full comment

I too wonder where are the Greenpeace types protesting all the birds getting chopped up by windmills, etc. Heaven forbid someone kill a bald eagle, yet these get away with killing many.

Those towers should never have been allowed to be built. Period. This affects everyone - no matter how you vote (or don't vote). It especially affects those who can't vote! Leftys are not liberals; they hijacked the liberals and took over. I'm a conservative myself but like most humans, this is breaking my heart! This is far beyond politics!!

With no pun intended, it looks as if somebody is making a real killing on this venture. Does the Biden Crime Family have its dirty paws on it? What politicians are involved? And of course, what mega-corporations? It stinks to high heaven of corruption.

Expand full comment

A big part of it is that they cover it up. So most people don't know. And secondly they have convinced many people that climate change is such a threat that getting rid of fossil fuels is worth any cost. Heck, some are probably convinced that CC is what is causing the beaching in the first place.

People still amaze me... I asked one of the science professors at the junior college I went to back in the 80s about global warming: Is it real or not? From how hard he was laughing, the answer was obviously, "No!" Now that people don't seem to take useful classes anymore (like science), they don't know that the whole climate nonsense is a hoax.

Expand full comment

Sadly, plenty of Professors wouldn't admit it even if they believed it was a hoax. Their jobs can often depend on towing the line.

It was well before the Al Gore era - it was still safe to be honest, apparently! Scientists did...science! I never heard the expression "Trust the science" until gain-of-Fauci. Anyone who knows anything about science knows that "the science" is never settled and it's never "settled." By "anyone," I mean "normal people who who have an IQ."

Expand full comment

Exactly right. Science is a process. Not a list of facts. You can trust that someone is doing the process right, but Science actually welcomes being questioned and tested. That is how we get more accurate results.

As for your teacher, it could also be because they were a Junior College teacher. My limited experience showed that my Community college teachers actually cared about teaching. My University teachers were there for research. So it is possible that your teacher just had integrity

Climate changes. Always has and always will, so let's deal with it and stop pretending that we are gods who control it. We do not, and there is only one G0d Who does, so we need to leave it to Him, and develop technologies to deal with both uncomfortable heat and deadly cold. Our Neolithic ancestors did a good job dealing with the cold, or we wouldn't be here. People have been driven to hysteria over nothing with this "catastrophic anthropogenic global climate change, we're all gonna die!" nonsense.

Absolutely it does and ALL in His control. We are just fortunate God hasn't decided to let the sun turn us into crispy critters, but keeps patiently waiting for us to turn to Him. :-)

The greenwashing of America has been extremely successful, to the point where "environmentalists" are perfectly willing to sacrifice the planet and all creatures great and small in order to save it from the perilous evil of fossil fuels. Ironically, it was the discovery of fossil fuels in the 1800's that saved the whales from being hunted to extinction for their oil. Follow the money, because that's all the only thing green about these unreliable renewables.

Since the opening of Moray East Wind Farm in Scotland 2018 we’ve had 8 whales beach around Moray Firth , I genuinely can’t remember this happening before and I’ve lived here for 37 years , we’ve been told not to post any pictures of stranded whales as it’s far too distressing for children and the local radio station has stopped mentioning this odd phenomena

I found this report extremely clear and well written, also chilling and tragic. Here I am, 91 yrs old,

reading simultaneously with my grandson Moby Dick. He is 36, living a 7 hr drive from me and we discuss 8 to 10 chapters at a time. The double irony is that in addition to Melville's account of the

whaling industry in the mid-19th century which began the animal's decimation leading to its present

near extinction, my grandson has worked in the wind and solar industry his entire career thinking he

was helping to mitigate climate catastrophe. So far, he still believes this. He was the one who suggested we read the book together. I had read it decades ago after it was finally recognized as the

greatest American novel. This time I can fully appreciate it's greatness. OF

Moby Dick is next in my reading queue, after yet another Horatio Hornblower novel about the Royal Navy slogging through the Napoleonic Wars. Somehow I can't seem to drag myself ashore, even if some of my reading is silly.

Moby Dick is indeed an important novel and might be America's greatest, but I need to re-read it now that I am in my seventies. I will probably find it far more compelling than I did at forty, or certainly at twenty. Your reading it with your young greenie grandson might open discussions concerning these latest deprecations being visited upon cetaceans and open his eyes to his own industry, which in my opinion is a frivolous attempt to do the impossible. Who knows?

Expand full comment

Dear Diane, Thank you for your response. I agree that the "renewables" industry is an

" attempt to do the impossible". It's probably more than frivolous given the money and powerful interests pushing it, many being the same corporations invested in fossil fuels. If the warming of the planet has any chance of being slowed, it will be

through a massive change in our western industrial lifestyle. I believe it's too late even

if the will and determination could be rallied. I'm glad you want to reread Moby Dick.

I believe that the planet will continue to warm, but that will be due to its inevitable cooling-warming cycles. We are coming out of a "little ice age" (our species also somehow survived the last major one), which began around the 12th century and officially began to end at the beginning of the 20th. The planet might continue to warm gradually, barring another major volcanic eruption (remember the winter of 1991, after Pinatubo blew its stack?) and the pleasant and bountiful conditions of the Medieval Warm Period could return, but keep in mind that the ice always comes back. Do not fear warming, but continue to create and maintain technologies that enable our descendants to cope with severe cooling.

I consider myself a conservative environmentalist, and this excellent expose piece brings me to tears. Just like with the V, we implement before fully testing. Obviously these wind turbines are affecting our sea mammals, not to mention the shredding of our sea birds! Is the minimal energy created by these turbines worth the maximum environment negative impact?
